«N» THE DESIGNERS OF THE FUTURE

On Thursday, May 14, 2026, BluArt Gallery officially opens its doors in Padua with an exhibition project dedicated to Gruppo N, the collective that between 1960 and 1964 became one of the leading protagonists of Optical, Kinetic and Programmed Art.

The members of the Padua-based collective — Alberto Biasi, Ennio L. Chiggio, Toni Costa, Edoardo Landi and Manfredo Massironi — preferred to define themselves as “researchers” rather than artists, or more precisely as “aesthetic operators.” Their investigations into visual perception employed industrial materials and, at times, emerging technologies. In this context, the relationship between their practices and the academic-experimental studies on perception psychology conducted at the University of Padua by Cesare Musatti, Fabio Metelli and Gaetano Kanizsa proved fundamental. These studies significantly influenced the young members of Gruppo N and contributed to the creation of a cultural avant-garde environment capable of projecting Padua onto the international stage.

The exhibition offers a new interpretative perspective on selected works created by the members of Gruppo N, both during their collective experience and in the years that followed. The common thread linking the exhibited works is their visionary anticipation of the digital era and algorithmic computation. Drawing upon the concept of “Programmed Art” theorized by Bruno Munari, these works resonate with the ambitious electronic research promoted during the same years by entrepreneur Adriano Olivetti, based on the idea that calculable premises can generate unexpected outcomes through electrical mechanisms or the unpredictable intervention of the viewer.

Under the direction of Migena Hajdari, BluArt Gallery presents itself as a new cultural platform for the city, combining the valorization of local artistic experiences with an exploration of the current frontiers of technology and creativity.

The opening exhibition, «N» The Designers of the Future, therefore assumes a symbolic significance: on one hand, it recalls a pivotal moment in Padua’s history as a center of avant-garde experimentation during the early 1960s; on the other, it establishes a dialogue with the present by offering tools and methodologies through which to understand contemporary visual languages. The experience of Gruppo N, officially concluded in 1964, reveals a legacy that today, in the age of artificial intelligence, appears more readable and relevant than ever.

Curated by Migena Hajdari and introduced during the opening by an art historical presentation from art historian Marta Previti, the exhibition presents Gruppo N through an interpretative lens that recontextualizes its research within the contemporary digital landscape. The city of Padua, with its centuries-old tradition of dialogue between science and art, provides the ideal setting for this reflection, which inaugurates the activity of BluArt Gallery at Via del Santo 119.
